I’m on a gluten free diet and have been eating Mesa Sunrise Flakes for breakfast for the past 10 years. In my opinion Mesa Sunrise has in the past been the best GF cereal on the market and the only one that I like. You can imagine my shock when I got my first taste of your new flat flakes in the “new look” bag and found they were almost inedible. I took a few bites and put the rest down the garbage disposal. As other commenters have said, the taste is like cardboard. I know you’ve said the recipe is the same, but the taste is NOT the same. If quality control is the problem, you are really tarnishing the reputation of Nature’s Path, especially in light of the numerous reports of packages of rancid flakes within the past year (I purchased 3 rancid packages myself).

I also came upon an Eco-Pack with rancid cereal in it but it was replaced by the food supplier. This happened only once in the many years I have been enjoying Mesa Sunrise and recommended it to my friends. Unfortunately recently, someone came up with the concept that an excellent product should be changed for the worse.
This new version of Mesa Sunrise is AWFUL ! I do hope the company will soon revert to the original version which was so pleasant, flavourful and gluten-free to boot which is the reason I bought it in the first place.

Different in the UK too…
We have bought Mesa Sunrise for years for our 5 year old son, who has had multiple food allergies since birth. It’s one of the very few foods he can tolerate.
Like others commenting, there appears to have been a recipe change (thinner flakes, cardboardy taste) in the latest UK boxes (amount changed from 300g to 355g & “Now with an extra bowlful” at the top right corner) & unfortunately, our son doesn’t like them at all.
We have bought up as much stock as we can of the older Mesa Sunrise, however, please tell us you’ll be reverting to the old recipe soon!

I have LOVED Mesa Sunrise
Submitted by Ann on April 29, 2012 - 17:58.
I have LOVED Mesa Sunrise Cereal and eaten it every single day for a few years, always rave about it and recommend it to others, and always take a box with me when I have to go out of town! So…. I was SO very, very disappointed when, upon opening a new box this Saturday morning, my cereal tasted horrible - like cardboard. Usually, I love every bite, but this time I dreaded each bit. And I had bought TWO boxes like this. Not wanting to have my Sunday morning be the same way, I went out Saturday evening to a different store and bought TWO of the large eco-bags of Mesa Sunrise, which happened to be on sale (and now I know why!). Sunday morning, I opened the new large eco-bag and had the same terrible experience - completely awful cardboard-like thin flakes. PLEASE tell me when this will be set right, as I have already wasted about $22 in cereal I can’t eat, and don’t want to purchase more of the same. Not sure what I’ll have for breakfast tomorrow morning! Will probably make some eggs, and then buy some other kind of cereal tomorrow. :-(

Hi - Like other commenters, I have been avoiding gluten and yet looking forward to beginning my day with delicious Mesa Sunrise cereal. Opened a new ecopackaging bag this morning and the change in shape and more importantly TASTE is obvious! Cardboard indeed. This is not a batch issue but a formula or supplier issue. The newer flavor is quite bran-like - as if there were an attempt to duplicate the high-fiber wheat cereals. No thanks to that!! Please say whether or not I can expect the same great taste as before. (I will be returning the bag I recently bought.)

NEW RECIPE IS TERRIBLE!
I totally agree with all the comments. I registered for this website just so I could post a reply. My boy and I have eaten this cereal for over 10 yrs and have PREVIOUSLY LOVED it, it is the only cereal I can eat. Yesterday I opened a new bag and couldn’t believe how bad it was. I even checked the bag thinking it must have a hole in it and be stale. I does taste like cardboard now! The texture is very grainy, and is not nearly as crisp or crunchy, and the taste is bland and stale. PLEASE CHANGE BACK TO THE OLD RECIPE! You will be losing lots of faithful customers if you do not.

Hello Folks, I have problems with gluten and have been eating and enjoying your breakfast cereals for years now. (I always buy the large plastic bags.) However, after having bought a bag of Mesa Sunrise with a new label on it I was also quite surprised to find that you have changed the way the ‘flakes’ are made. Aside from the fact that it now feels as if I am chewing on cardboard, I find the taste is not up to your usual standards. If this is the case after buying the next ‘bag’ of cereal I’m afraid I will have to search elsewhere for variety in my morning ritual. Why you would want to change something that kept you above the other mainstream manufacturers doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Hi there, i was hoping some one could answer a few questions for me. My wife is convinced that the cereal is thinner than previous packages. She has taken to measuring and weighing each indivisual flake. So far she has had mixed results. She measured 25 flake of her current bag and actually dug through the trash and scraped together 25 flakes of her previous bag. Please help me end this embrassing behavior.

Hi there - Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We’ve looked into reports of thinner flakes in our Mesa Sunrise cereal and can confirm there was a batch made with thinner flakes than usual and therefore not up to our high quality standards. Rest assured, our Mesa Sunrise Flakes have not undergone any formulation or recipe change. Our family buys 2-4 750G ‘eco
Submitted by Zeb (not verified) on April 2, 2012 - 17:06.
Our family buys 2-4 750G ‘eco pac’ packages of Mesa Sunrise per month. My son cannot have gluten and I find Mesa Sunrise to be a cereal that is not only gluten free, but relatively healthy, and very tasty (especially as opposed to just a puffed rice cereal say).
Unfortunately, with the last two packages I noticed that the flakes are visibly thinner, and the taste and texture is nowhere near what it used to be, and my two kids have noticed as well. (I eat the cereal both dry and with milk, and no matter how it’s eaten the change is obvious).
You can claim that “Mesa Sunrise cereal has not had any ingredient or formulation change” (this is quoted from a response by an NP employee to another post) but the flakes have very obviously been made thinner, and the overall quality have suffered as a result. I appreciate that businesses are attempting to cut back on costs wherever possible (the orange juice I buy shrunk its sizes downward by 60ml without reducing the price, but at least it still tastes the same) but it’s frustrating when shifts occur in the quality of a product.
I wouldn’t be happy with a price increase of Nature’s Path products, but as long as the quality (especially the taste and texture) was maintained I would likely still buy them. However, when the quality goes down… we’re going to have to look for another cereal, which is frustrating when the whole family has been enjoying Mesa Sunrise, and trying to find a decent gluten-free breakfast cereal is not easy.

I too am concerned about GMO’s. I’ve been eating Mesa Sunrise for many years now. But I’ve recently learned that a product may contain GMO’s and still be labelled “Organic”. So I find myself looking more closely at the products I had come to trust. Today I looked all over the Eco-Pak for any kind of labeling about GMO’s — and found none. Which is what led me to look you up online… I’m very pleased to hear that there are no GMO’s in my cereal. But I wonder why you don’t put that clearly on the packaging. For anyone who’s reading this, I had the same problem. I discovered that many chain health food stores such as Whole Foods carry slightly different product lines due to the individual choices of the buyers at those stores, and the limitations of stock space. That means just because the Whole Foods in your neighborhood doesn’t have your favorite flavor, it doesn’t mean you couldn’t find it at he one down the road. That’s what I ended up doing. Also, they often will take special requests if you want something ordered in, just ask the grocery manager.

Hi Betty and thanks for sharing your concerns with us! South American products when used by Nature’s Path must be certified organic to the same standards that we use in USA or in Canada. They must be inspected annually just like here. We only deal with companies that have a track record of good organic practices and following the high level of organic integrity that we expect. As an organic company, our prodcuts don’t contain any artificial preservatives, additives, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the ingredients aren’t grown with toxic pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or fumigants. In the US, our products are certified organic by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program (NOP) and in Canada our products are certified by the Canadian Organic Office (COO), a department of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). We’re proud to say we’re the first cereal company to become USDA certified organic, and we take this honor very seriously. To read more on our certification and feelings about organics, please see here: http://www.naturespath.com/eat-well/organics. I hope the info I’ve shared can help earn your trust in Nature’s Path. Hi there and thanks for taking the time to share your comments with us. We are very sorry you had this experience. If your cereal has a fishy, plasticy odor, this is likely due to the flaxseed oil in the cereal which may have oxidized or gone rancid. There is likely no food safety issue— only a sensory issue with the smell by some people- but when in doubt, throw out! If those who have consumed this cereal experience feelings of sickness, please visit a medical practitioner ASAP. I have told Quality Assurance of this ongoing issue.
