I’m sorry but this is not my experience. I currently have 2 boxes of Heritage Flakes — one with a best before date of Nov 2012, and the other with a best before date of Feb 2013. I am not able to tell any difference between the two, and neither is like the original recipe.
I’m tired of buying new boxes, hoping the old recipe is back and being disappointed. I’m hoping the date information above is wrong, but it seems more likely that the cereal has NOT been changed to the old recipe.

I just discovered your cereal and love it! I used to like Lucky Charms and Coco Pebbles as my favorite cereal, but now it is Heritage Flakes. One thing though… the first time I tried some it was in a plastic bag only and tasted divine. I tried to find it again, and got a smaller cardboard box and it didn’t taste nearly as good. Hi Janet - Thanks for getting in touch and pointing this out to us. We appreciate your feedback and are sorry you had this experience with your latest box of Heritage Flakes. There was a modification made to the original recipe for a short period of time, but after hearing feedback from our friends we’ve gone back to the original tasty recipe. Please fill out our contact form and provide the codes on the top of the box and we’ll be happy to get back to you and set things right again. We thank you in advance for your patience and hope that you’ll continue to try this product as it has now gone back to the original recipe! http://www.naturespath.com/contact-us All the best, Itziar

If there is any difference between the two it is marginal, at best, and neither of these is the “original” recipe. Hi Mary, thanks for your question. Large amounts of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals in cereals are very rare. When you see vitamin percentages listed on some cereal boxes it is because they are added as supplements to the natural ingredients. As a committed quality organic food company we believe that getting nutrients from real food sources beats fortified ingredients any day. All the best, Itziar, Nature’s Path Team

I remember buying ancient grains through a co-op and how I was so happy to have a cereal that was hearty, filling, and made me feel like I was doing my body good. I follow a primal/paleo style of eating most of the time which “goes against the grain” haha, HOWEVER, I cannot get enough of this cereal…it is the only grain exception I will happily make. NOTE: I’m so happy to hear that the flakes will thicken up again! (Read Justine’s response to Bruce below)… but here are my two cents anyway. Dear Nature’s Path, My husband and I eat Heritage flakes every day for breakfast. We love them! It is a good feeling to know that our breakfast is not genetically altered, and I have one less health-related thing to worry about. I’ve enjoyed your cereals for about 4 years now, and plan to continue enjoying them for many years to come. However, my husband and I both have been disappointed with recent batches of the Heritage Whole Grains cereal. We are used to hardy flakes that stand up well to almond milk (which is kind of watery and in my experience tends to wilt the flakes even more quickly than cow’s milk). We have also grown accustomed (perhaps a little spoiled =]) to the real-wheat flavor of your hardy flakes. Recently, I have noticed that the wheat cereal does not have the same wheat-y flavor as it once had a few boxes ago. I think this mostly has to do with the fact that the flakes are much flimsier. Before, your cereal withstood several minutes of milk-contact without losing all of its crunch. Now, only after a minute or two most of the flakes become completely soggy. I understand the economy is tough and companies have to adjust production to stay afloat, but I don’t think this should ever involve a compromise in quality. My husband and I would like to remain faithful customers to Nature’s Path, but so long as this compromise continues, we will have to start considering other brands. Please return your cereal to its original quality that we’ve grown to love. If this is not possible, I would ask that you at least note the change of quality on your packaging, so customers know what they are buying is not the same. Thank you very much, —Monica

Hi,
Thank you for the Heritage Heirloom Whole Grains cereal.
I really appreciate having a healthy, organic, lower sugar cereal choice, and it is now part of my regular mix.
I did notice the changeover of the flakes, about a month or so ago — and for me the change is fine and OK. (I confess that the flakes now are actually a tad easier for me to consume.)
I am guessing that perhaps they are cooked less or at perhaps a lower temperature, and/or are thinner stock??
Anyway, I would wish you to convey my satisfaction with the product, and my wish that you all continue to produce healthy food products that are low in sugar, and as minimally processed as possible (which to me means not over cooked, etc) so as to retain the most nutition goodness.
Thank you.

What happened with Heritage Flakes is that we started producing them in our Sussex, WI facility instead of our Delta, BC facility. I agree with many of the comments here regarding the change in the Heritage Whole Grains flakes - the cereal is no longer distinctive, but just another run of the mill so-so variety. Taste is still very good, but the texture isn’t special and it doesn’t hold up well in milk any longer. I have thoroughly enjoyed the few years of really outstanding product in Heritage Flakes. I came to this site to try to understand why my Heritage Flakes had changed. I hardly ever ate cold cereal until I stumbled upon Heritage Flakes about 4 years ago. FINALLY, a cereal that is not sugary sweet; a cereal that is hearty and healthy; and most importantly flakes that stayed crunchy in milk - even until my final bite! I couldn’t figure out why no one had ever made a cereal like that before. I’ve been hooked ever since (and have hooked SEVERAL of my friends and family). In fact, I actually buy my cereal by the case - for a case discount. When I travel I used to take boxes with me; it was a great cereal to eat dry as a snack! When I opened the most recent box, I was hoping (like others on this page) that the flimsy flakes were a one-time processing fluke and not an intentional change. But, it seems as though my fears are confirmed. Sadly, if this new version remains, it looks like I will be on the search for a new cereal. The new Heritage Flakes are run-of-the-mill, like every other “‘flake that gets soggy in milk” cereal. That’s the main reason I didn’t eat cold cereal to begin with.
Sadly, the new flakes will not hold up in milk, will not hold up as a crunchy stand alone snack, will not hold up in gorp (as one writer above has used it for).
Please consider changing back to the original flake. You had an AMAZING thing going.
